Kintsugi Workshop at TOKOBO
Traditional Japanese repair using urushi lacquer

This hands-on Kintsugi course runs over five sessions, each lasting two hours, held on Sunday mornings at our studio in London E8. There is no replacement class, and please ensure you can attend all dates before registering.

Kintsugi, meaning “golden joinery,” is a traditional Japanese technique for mending broken ceramics. Originating in the 15th century, the method involves joining, filling, and highlighting cracks using urushi lacquer. Our workshop follows the authentic process, carefully adapted to suit the UK climate.

All tools and materials are provided. We recommend bringing 3–5 broken ceramic pieces (ideally small and with simple damage such as clean cracks, small chips, or hairline cracks). Smooth, shiny glazed surfaces are the easiest to work with.

Before you bring your items, please note:

  • Pieces broken into more than four parts may be too complex to repair within the course timeframe.

  • Narrow, tall shapes can be difficult to work on—please check that your fingers can reach the area to be repaired.

Additional Information

  • Repaired items should not be placed in the microwave, oven, or dishwasher.

While the traditional method finishes the repair with genuine gold, it is technically challenging to handle and we use brass gold powder in this workshop. As a result, the repaired pieces are not guaranteed to be fully food-safe.

If you wish to keep your item food-safe, we can guide you through ways to finish the repair accordingly. Genuine gold or silver powder is also available for purchase upon request.

  • A beginner’s Kintsugi kit (£38) is available to purchase if you'd like to continue at home.

Join us to learn this meditative craft and give new life to your treasured ceramics.
